The concrete is built up to house the altar as seen in the blueprint picture. May 2023:
We will be blessed to begin the Sanctuary project soon! The renderings you see are the work of the past year and a half, all initiated by a generous donor who gave money to help get the project started. Several other donors also came forward in the last year to make the project possible. With those donations and Witness to Hope funds from those who have been completing their pledges, I am happy to report that the project is almost entirely paid for. We will be using about $10,000 in savings, but even that number is getting smaller due to others who have been giving to the project. If you are interested in giving, we would of course welcome your gift! I want to thank our Design Committee, the Parish Pastoral Council, and Parish Finance Council who have all been involved with the process. We have received our final approval from the Diocese and our construction permit was granted by the City of Howell. I am not sure on our exact starting date, but expect it to begin in the next few weeks.
You will notice that the project greatly reduces the overall sanctuary area, which allows for additional seating in the front. The sanctuary will also be much safer as we remove several tripping hazards and move the ramp next to the ambo for the ease of our lectors at Mass. The altar currently has several stress fractures, which is why we are adding additional marble to better support its weight as the altar is moved to its new location. We are also hoping to construct a new marble ambo to match the altar, as well as purchase new altar furniture to replace the existing chairs.
How will the construction process work? During construction, there will be a temporary wall built about five feet behind the altar (at its current location), allowing us to use the Church on the weekends for Mass. The daily Masses will take place in the gym while the contractors work during the week. I expect the construction to take about 8-10 weeks, though the timing will be dictated by the conditions we find as the wood laminate is removed. Thank you for your patience during the construction and we will tweak things as needed to help it all go smoothly!
