“By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. And indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the People of God by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ.” – Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1499
The Sacrament of the Sick was commonly known as "Last Rites" or "Extreme Unction." So, do you have to be dying to receive it?
Canon Law states that anyone who is in danger of death from an illness or from old age can receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Likewise, if the person's condition should worsen, the sacrament may be repeated.
Call the office to schedule an appointment for the Sacrament of Anointing. If your loved one is in a hospital, ask the nurse to contact the Spiritual/Pastoral Care office to seek out a local priest.
